MIT-WPU Space Branding: School of Computer Science & Institute of Artificial Intelligence

Space Branding + Wayfinding + Storytelling

The Project Brief

Transform the Vyas Building’s environment by integrating ancient wisdom with modern technology to enhance navigation & learning.

Project Duration

20 weeks

Team Involved

Govind Kabade, Amruta Jadhav, Sanhita Sahastrabuddhe, Madhura Wani & Me (Gaurav Dhande).

My role in the project

First time I got an opportunity to handle end to end live project as a project head.

I was responsible for planning & handling communication of client’s side. On the other hand, As an graphic designer in OneZeroEight studio. my role was to conceptualize diverse scenarios of information visualization that transform the Institutional building into a immersive experience. I aimed to construct narrative based graphics & interactions that help students to educate. Tried weaving a story that bridges the gap between traditional knowledge & modern technology.

Analysis

Understood the space requirements & project objectives.

Conducted an in-depth exploration of the institute’s values & core.

Ideology & Core Study

Measured the space & defined functional zones.

Space Assessment & Zoning

Iterate & crafted a compelling narrative.

Concept Development

Presented the concept to the client for initial feedback.

Client Presentation

Managed the installation of the graphics & ensured seamless execution.

On-Site Implementation

Conducted print checks to ensure accuracy & quality.

Print Quality Assurance

Received final approvals from the copy team & the client.

Content & Client Approval

Development detailed designs for each floor & touchpoint.

Design Execution

Gathered information to align the graphics with educational goals.

Content Research

on these statements, I got a story for the Concept (Manifesto)

From here, the process of connecting the dots began to create a narrative-driven theme. It was essential to understand MIT-WPU’s values, their historical significance, and how they shape the institute’s future through new buildiing

We concluded that MIT-WPU’s ideologies are firmly rooted in Maharshi Vyas’s teachings, following a similar path of structured research and learning in modern education. This became the central theme, leading us to explore who Maharshi Vyas was and his contributions before building the concept further.

Maharshi Vyas, also known as Ved Vyas, is a revered sage in Indian history, best known for compiling the Vedas. He is considered a key figure in the structuring of ancient knowledge.

Taking a broader perspective, the dots connect as follows, Maharshi Vyas, a great astrologer, studied celestial bodies & recorded their movements and data in the Vedas.

“The universe operates like a giant computational system, following simple rules that evolve into complexity, just like algorithms in artificial intelligence.”

& as Stephen Wolfram says,

This Building is dedicated to education of computation & artificial intelligance with spacialized labs & integrated classrooms for,

02. Ideation Phase

At MIT WPU, I used the Navagraha as a conceptual framework to represent computation across the nine floors of the Vyas Building.

Each floor aligns with a celestial body, drawing parallels between its cosmic influence and a fundamental computational concept.

Ground floor

Just as Surya governs the entire solar system, the operating system controls and manages a computer's resources, acting as the central authority that ensures coordination & balance between hardware & software.

The chandra reflects light and affects the tides, DBMS reflects & manages data flow, adapting to user needs and queries. It stores, retrieves, and reflects the data, enabling smooth and adaptive access to information.

Mangal symbolizes raw energy & action, much like C / C++ programming languages, which are powerful & fast, directly influencing system level operations.

Budha is the planet of communication, which facilitate communication between systems. Networks ensure data flows efficiently between devices, connecting the world through the intelligent exchange of information

Guru, the planet of wisdom, represents knowledge expansion, These concepts allow us to handle vast amounts of data efficiently and solve complex computational problems, expanding the reach of what can be achieved.

Shura represents harmony & creativity, which aligns with OOP principles like inheritance, These principle allow programmers to build modular, reusable, & aesthetically pleasing code, fostering creativity in software design.

Saturn is associated with structure, discipline, & long-term planning, which involves meticulous planning, testing, structuring of projects.

On each floor we have 14 passage walls, 7 pilllers & 5 labs (2 walls in each lab)

To address these & simplify the work process I have set a templates according to the wall positions & storyline.

04. Execution & takeaways

When started working the site was look like,

After some sampling & testing done by vendor, Production started.

but before that, Final background colour code needs to be add on all artworks. since client wants to opt for venyle printing.

& then finally the Idea & planning started taking shape into reality

As we near completion,

this project has been a journey of collaboration, creativity, and learning. From finishing 03 floors in 08 weeks after execution started in January 25’ to ongoing refinements, every detail reflects dedication.

Grateful for the incredible team and experiences that shaped my first ever live spatial graphics project.
